So last night I saw Kirstin Vangsness’ one woman show, “Mess, ” with Valerie and Kelsie. It was fantastic, and the performance space where it was held, Gemini and Scorpio Loft, was a really wonderful and intimate space, as well. After the show, we went up to talk to her, and I was just shaking with fear. I knew I needed to thank her, but I was worried I’d stumble over my words and sound foolish. As I approached her she came to give me a hug and said “Hi! What’s your name?” “Hindi” “Hi Hindi! I’m Kirsten!” I took in a deep breath, and first thanked her for retweeted the TED conversation on women in tech that I was hosting earlier this year, and then I started to explain to her how thankful I am to her for playing the part of Garcia.

My backstory: I’m a 22 year old student getting her BE in Chemical Engineering, but I’ve also taken countless electives in computer programming (I think when it comes down to it, that’s what I want to do for a job). I started watching Criminal Minds last year because enough of my friends and classmates told me that “there’s a blonde plus-size bespectacled computer programmer with a penchant for frilly dresses on the show and YOU NEED TO WATCH IT.”

But the thing is, is that growing up, I didn’t have any role models like Garcia on TV. The only people that I saw coding were my dad and his male co-workers. So I grew up never seeing the field as something I could go into, never seeing it as something I’d want to learn. It wasn’t until my freshman year of college that that world was opened up to me, through the work of an amazing professor.

I have a 15 year old sister who is seriously my mini-me, both in looks, and personality. Because of visibility of characters like Garcia and even Oswin Oswald from the season 7 premiere of Doctor Who, I’ve been able to convince her that programming is something awesome and fun and that it’s not just something our dad does. She’s been teaching herself JavaScript and C++ for a few months now, and that’s just so incredible to me. She’s one of like 3 girls in a pre-engineering high school program, and she’s the leader of her (otherwise all -boy) group’s final microcontroller project, because she’s the best coder.

When I explained my similarities to Garcia and how thankful I am on behalf of my sister, she picked two flowers off the stage and told me to do a “Garcia is working” pose with her for a picture. (That was after I got a normal, smiling picture with her.)

She was too sweet and so amazing and I’m so happy I got the chance to meet her and thank her for everything. If you get the chance to see her perform Mess in the future (and can relate to feeling like your life and your room is a mess beyond your control), don’t even hesitate.

have you tried opening the terminal and typing:

sudo apt-get update

and then
sudo apt-get upgrade

That should bring everything in your current installation up to date.

Iraqi officials have found three mass graves containing the bodies of about 1,000 people thought to have been executed by US soldiers during their occupation of the country.

The graves were uncovered in Iraq’s western province of al-Anbar. The remains are believed to be from victims killed by US forces during 2004 and 2005 in the city of Fallujah, located roughly 69 kilometers (43 miles) west of Baghdad.

The article mentions that they’re going to do DNA tests on the bodies to see if there is any match to those who are missing.

“Going to do” being the operative phrase. As in there’s no evidence yet, just conjecture. But that’s not stopping people from just blaming the US.

I dunno, stuff like this just pisses me off because I feel like people let their emotions have liberty over truth. I know it’s impossible to detach completely from things but I’d rather not give conservative people more ammunition for their belief that liberals are the “blame America first” types.
